Many Singapore homeowners are unsure whether they need an aircon chemical wash or a chemical overhaul — and some service providers use the terms interchangeably, which adds to the confusion. Here is a clear explanation of the difference. An aircon chemical wash cleans the evaporator coil, blower fan, and drainage system in place — without dismantling the indoor unit. The technician wraps the unit in a protective catchment bag and sprays specialised chemical cleaning solution directly onto the evaporator coil and blower fan. The solution dissolves stubborn layers of dirt, grease, mould, bacteria, and slime that have accumulated deep within the fins and surfaces — contaminants that regular general servicing cannot reach because they are bonded to the metal. The dirty solution drains into the catchment bag along with loosened debris, and the drainage system is flushed thoroughly. This process takes about 45 to 60 minutes per indoor unit and is effective for units with moderate to significant buildup. An aircon chemical overhaul goes further — it is a complete teardown of the indoor unit. The technician removes the indoor unit from the wall and fully dismantles it, separating the evaporator coil, blower fan, drain pan, and casing. Each component is then individually soaked in chemical solution in a cleaning tray for extended contact time, ensuring every surface is thoroughly cleaned. After soaking, components are rinsed, dried, and reassembled before the unit is remounted and tested. This process takes 1.5 to 2 hours per indoor unit and is necessary for severely neglected units where the contamination is too heavy for in-place chemical wash to remove effectively.
